Everyone that has one of these plants JUST LOVES IT! They are fun for kids and adults alike! Super easy to grow as a house plant (office plant - classroom plant) in all zones, they do great in hanging baskets where their leaves (which can get quite long) can cascade down.
Not an onion at all, of course, but so called because of the bulb that grows above the soil like which looks like an onion. The pregnant part comes in because of the way these plants produce babies on their sides. You will begin to see a bulge on the side of the bulb and it will grow and grow until the 'skin' opens and the baby plants come out! Just set the babies on the soil and they will grow, making a whole family of these novel plants for you!
These plants are a fun and novel gift to give to the mother to be at baby showers!
Hardy to grow outside in zone 9 and warmer, these make excellent house plants in all zones. Grow in bright shade to part sun and don't overwater! Very drought tolerant.
Older plants will bloom in the spring and summer with long spikes of white and green flowers. The photo is of some of my older 'mother' plants.
