Camphor Tree Seeds Cinnamomum camphora, Shade Tree

24+ Camphor Tree Seeds. These are fresh seeds, just harvested in fall 2005. The tree in the photo is about 5 years old grown from seed.

Camphors are one of my favorite trees for many reasons:

  • They make EXCELLENT shade trees, with it's 'mushroom' shape that gets as nearly as wide as it does tall. Their root systems are deep - unlike Laurel Oaks and Magnolias that have so many roots right on the surface, Camphor's don't.  Their canopy will reach 50' high and easily as wide, grow in nearly any well draining soil in full sun or partial shade.
  • I've read that they also make lovely bonsai specimens - their moderate growth rate makes them easy to grow as a bonsai.
  • They produce berries in the fall and winter that are a feast for our feathered friends at a time when other food sources are at their lowest.  I love watching the Robins and other birds as they devour  the Camphor berries; the whole tree appears to be alive as they dart around searching out the best berries!
  • They smell wonderful. Crush a few leaves in your hands and smell the wonderful camphor oil aroma.  Yes, this is the REAL THING!

Camphors are hardy in zones 9-11, but can be grown as a houseplant / bonsai in any zone!  I have several (large and small) camphors in my yard and LOVE THEM. They make a wonderful place to escape the summer heat - but be sure to give them room to grow - they will get large, so plant with that in mind!
