You are buying a nice large handful of cuttings (I gave up counting these, you won't be dissappointed in the amount you receive - enough to start a 10" hanging basket) of Bolivian Jew, Turtle Vine, Itsy Bitsy Inch Vine (Callisia repens, Tradescantia minima). (I've also seen this sold as Baby's Tears, Creeping Inch Plant and Creeping Basket Plant)
These root VERY, VERY EASILY - simply lay your cuttings down in a pot or on the ground and cover lightly with some soil and keep lightly moist - within just a few days you'll see the new leaves popping up everywhere and before long you'll have a luxurious mat of green and purple leaves covering your container! You'll get enough to cover the top of an average 2 gallon nursery pot (about 10" diameter).
It multiplies and spreads extremely quickly creating a luxurious mat of leaves that are green above and purple below with purple stems. The purple undersides of the leaves gives the whole plant a purple 'glow' that really doesn't come through in a photo - it's very lovely and rich!
This plant is useful to keep those potted plants from drying out as it will form a thick mat at the base of taller plants. I grow it in ALL my containers that have taller plants in them - it looks GREAT hanging down the sides of the containers and acts as a 'mulch' around the base of the plants, too. It also makes excellent hanging baskets that can grow as much as 3' in a single season.
I have grown this as an annual groundcover for several years just by keeping a few sprigs going through the winter in my greenhouse.
Propagation is easy. Simply lay a few small sprigs in moist soil, watering regularly. Roots form in days, and plant spreads out and thickens within 30 days to fill a 10" pot. It is a perennial to USDA Zone 10. They make EXCELLENT house plants, growing very well in containers at home or the office.
